Underrated Masterpieces From the 00s?

Criticism: The bottom half of the list is dreary, depressing crap that turns audiences off, and The Life Aquatic was a painful waste of, I don’t know, several weeks I think. Also, Treasure Planet is NOT great art.

Not even a little bit.
Not even a little bit.

On the other hand, Open Range is an incredible modern western and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is legitimately astounding: I was astounded by the performances of those involved, especially Casey Affleck. And, of course, Watchmen is a modern day classic, an utterly compelling cinematic achievement whose innate darkness and anti-heroism turned audiences off and doomed it to low Box Office returns.

  1. I think Watchmen would fare better today than it did at the time. But, I could be wrong. I did like both Moon, and Lord of War.

  2. Watchmen kind of blew me away when I first saw it, but it didn’t hold up after a second watching – with one or two exceptions, you’d have to go to Starship Troopers for weirder inhuman delivery of lines. A lot of the direct quotes from the comic just did not work when spoken aloud.
Also, it seems out of place on this list – it was successful and, through merchandising, made DC a crap-ton of money; it just doesn’t look successful when stacked up against Marvel ‘fun for the family’ tentpole superhero flicks.

    Equilibrium – Fahrenheit 451 with gun-fu!
Treasure Planet was not as bad as I expected it to be.
    Wes Anderson is ridiculously overrated.
The Fall was not as good as Second Hand Lions, but what movie without Robert Duvall and Michael Caine is?
Assassination of Jesse James is the only western I like as much as Once Upon a Time in the West.

  3. Funny how one of the most overrated comic books can also be one of the most underrated movies. We should be glad it wasn’t a bigger hit considering how the original comic went on to ruin its own industry. I, for one, could do without a subversive Captain America or Avengers movie.

Brick isn’t underrated. Noir fans already know and like it. It has all the audience a movie like that was going to get. Much like the rest of this list. Steve Zissou in particular was just a bad movie that was flat and meandering.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang isn’t well known? It’s by the writer of Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 and stars Robert Downey Jr. I could swear it was a hit when it came out.

At least they got #1 right. Robert Ford is one of the best westerns ever.

  4. Treasure Planet has some really weird/dumb ideas about science, but it’s one I watch once in a while and still like. Maybe I like it more for what it could have been, though.

It’s easy to be lenient with it because there are so few Planetary Romance movies made. It’s why Jupiter Ascending was one of my favorite movies of 2015 despite nearly everything about it being terrible.

  6. I’ve loved Brick and The Life Aquatic for years. Brick is a regular re-watch for me, especially.

I too enjoyed Jupiter Ascending – just for the visuals. I wish the Wachowski’s would let someone else do the writing and just concentrate on visuals.
