Is The New Magnificent Seven All That Magnificent?

Look, Chris Pratt is one of my current favorite actors, and Denzel is obviously a legend, but I just do not see how this movie can compete with the likes of Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Yul Brynner, Robert Vaughn, Eli Wallach, and Horst Buchholz.

The Magnificent Seven
Unmatched.

It. Cannot. Be. Done.

The best one can hope for is that this is a quite excellent Western, but one which is nonetheless inferior to the original. At worst, it might be inferior to the sci-fi remake, Battle Beyond the Stars (in which Robert Vaughn plays essentially the exact same role he did in The Magnificent Seven).

Battle Beyond The Stars had a spaceship with boobs. Your argument is invalid.

Shudder in fear.

  1. No, I don’t watch trailers. But I had no intention to watch this anyway, so I did. Having not known anything about the casting or director, I was surprised to see such big names and such a capable hand behind the camera. Those details made me more interested to see it, at least on streaming.
But whoever edited that trailer really should go back to film school. If you think westerns are about quick cuts between scenes of violence, which don’t even look to be associated with each other, then you don’t know your subject. It gave no feeling of menace to the villains, and made the action look more like a comedy romp.

  2. I am looking forward to this and that’s mostly due to Chris Pratt. Denzel is solid, too. Man’s done some serious action movies. The rest of the cast feels like the Might Morphin Multicultural Rangers, ala Thor 2, but who knows. At least they’re killing white folks, amirite?

I’ll reserve judgement on the camera work until I see the real thing, trailers get cut up pretty choppy.

  3. Given that TM7 is a remake of Akira Kurosawas “Seven Samurai” wouldn’t Battle Beyond the Stars also be a remake of Seven Samrai?
