James Bond’s Greatest Theme Songs!

Had a contretemps over on Twitter vis a vis the best James Bond theme song of all time. Tired of my own indecision, I went whole hog, bit the bullet, and bought the definitive album of all the Bond themes ever. (Except Never Say Never Again, which I also tracked down.)

So here it is, my list of the top 5 Bond Themes of all time.

Honorable Mention: The first. The original. The musical score used in Dr. No and every Bond film ever since. “James Bond Theme”.

5. “Tomorrow Never Dies”, Sheryl Crow.

4. “A View To A Kill”, Duran Duran.

One of the premier New Romantics bands, with one of their better songs.

3. “For Your Eyes Only”, Sheena Easton.

Some of the most gorgeous music included in any of the themes. I love the opening bars.

2. “Golden Eye”, Tina Turner.

The strings in this song are simple but impeccable, and add a stirring urgency to the pop melody.

1. “The World is Not Enough”, Garbage.

I love this song. I love this video. Garbage is simply the best of the James Bond theme makers, hands down.

  1. No Sir Paul? Live and Let Die was so good Axl Rose tried to do a cover. It should be in the top 5. I definitely agree with View to a Kill – I was just humming that last night.

  2. I want to quibble over numbers one and two, but it’s a hair’s width of difference between them. And…I would give the nod to Garbage over Tina, though grudgingly.

Only one I would punt is Sheryl Crow, as hers is one of my definite disliked songs. Would counter that with Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” from the Casino Royale reboot.
