Trailer of The Century! Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The second teaser trailer for JJ Abrams’ Star Wars Episode VII has debuted…

People were all atwitter over on, uh, Twitter when this was released. My reaction was more muted: “Meh.” Not that the trailer looked BAD, because it didn’t. But because I KNOW who made the movie: JJ Abrams.

Don’t get me wrong, I like a lot of Abrams. Fringe, Mission Impossible III, the first rebooted Star Trek.

The rebooted Star Trek was an action movie. Which was fine, as far as it went. But the second (Into Darkness) was a disaster. It took the old series and movies, chewed them up and spat them out, then served the result as if it were all brand new.

HINT: It wasn’t.

My dread is that this movie will turn out the exact same way.

  1. Agreed on all counts. I *want* to like the new movie, but I can’t shake the dread. At least the practical BB-8 droid is cool.

  2. I dunno, I’ve got a better feeling about this one than STID. Part of that is because they’re doing it ‘old school’; 35mm film, lots of practical effects, minimal CG used to fill in the gaps. Lawrence Kasdan (ESB, Raiders) wrote the screenplay. John Williams on soundtrack. Hopefully some of Abrams’s wilder tendencies will be held in check by the medium. God knows he can’t be THAT much worse than Lucas.

  3. My caution is that visual alone don’t a good movie make. I did like most of the images they’re teasing here but I remember 1999 and the Phantom Menace teasers were very cool.

So I’ll believe when I see. JJ can screw just about any point before he gets to the finish line (ala Super 8) but who knows, maybe it’ll be good.

  4. I want to believe…
Actually the fact that it’s Disney behind it does give me some hope, they actually tend to treat their stuff with respect.

  5. After the utterly borked marketing for John Carter, I’ve little faith left in Disney. At least three name changes during the marketing campaign, then trying to sell it as a star wars alike – utterly idiotic. The movie itself was great, killed by marketing morons.

Onto Star Wars tho.. I thought some of the visuals in the new trailer were off (that Star Destroyer at the start really doesnt look right in he background), and some of the sets *really* looked cheap. I’m hoping that’ll all be knocked out in post production, as the stuff that looked polished was really good, but I’m not holding out much hope.
