April Fools, and ThinkGeek posts a typical Internet hoax: a “technomancer” hoodie with built-in light and sound that responds to arm motions. Arms out, it lights up red, arms up, purple. Each is a “spell”. Red is, and brace yourself for the shock, a fireball.
Funny hoax, everybody laughs. Then some damn fool goes and builds the thing, and makes it available for sale. And builds in nine “spells” for people to cast. And it sells out.
From hoax to sold out hit in no time flat. Welcome to the Internet.
