  1. It’s important to note here that the “debunked” theory is the “critical positivity” theory, which any psychologist would take as a rather gross generalization anyway. The greater field, positive psychology, is a valid, growing discipline with a lot of attention and respect out there.
    The critical positivity theory is most appropriately seen as a cut-off to define at what point one can be said to be emotionally healthy. It’s like what a body-mass index is for body composition, and about as useful (that is, not) at the individual level. It’s most useful as a tool to apply to research of populations. The problem is when it is applied as a tool that it is not intended to be.
